Solar Winds is the pinnacle of science fiction. It gives the chance to be this tough guy with a cool spaceship and lots of guns. And you get to dish out great lines, too. "YOU ARE MORE UGLY" -- yow! Take that, Wartface!

One of the main attractions of this game is the mix of a complex story and random control options. Combat was a joke -- compare X-wing's space combat model with SW's flying in circles spitting red death pellets -- but I feel this was an advantage. After two battles, you'd have all the combat skills you'd ever need, and you can concentrate on the plot. But they don't ignore the appetite for control; you get to make tough calls, like whether to add power to the life support or sensor systems.

Apart from shooting space carrots, the game consists of flying from planet to planet talking to random space guys. The fundamental appeal of the game is getting to the next planet and talking to the next guy. Wow, a junk planet! Cool! Sexy space hermits?? Neato! You were never disappointed by the next step in the plot.

In that vein, the single finest point of the game was interstellar travel. Nothing could ever top the thrill of punching in the hyperdrive for the first time and waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting..

The only real flaw of the game is the ending. As soon as you reach the last cut scene, you're jonesing for more SW action.

What a good game

I'll be damned if this isn't one of the best space games I've ever played. While I admit that its no Star Control II, It's still could teach a few tricks to these younger space whipper-snappers.

My only complaint about this game is how the music cycles. Kinda anoying to someone like me, who is used to different music for each species of alien. But then again, the music is really good, so that kinda makes up for it.

If you liked this game, I suggest SW II. Its nothing in comparison. However, if you dont bother comparing the games, SWII is really cool. I dont think Im allowed to tell you how to get it, but I suggest asking around at all of your street-side dealers.

Also, if you liked this game, check out the Star Control series. It kicks ass as well, as I'm sure someone out there can testify to.

Peace.

Jon.

HARD

This game is VERY HARD! I spent days going to sector 1033, whatever! Now I don't know what to do! The game is impossible! If Darius knows WHAT THE HELL I CAN DO I would appreciate it! Thank you. As a parting comment, this game is inventive and difficult!

Doesn't suck.

Yeah. I played it - and I liked it. Why'd I like it? Because I played it. Smoke on that logic, why doncha?

Heh, honestly though. This is one of my favorite games of all time. The only real pisser is the lack of smart combat and waiting on the Not-Quite-Ready-For-Space-Time hyperdrive to get you across the galaxy. Waiting does have a certain charm and gets you into the strangely cozy desolation of space, but when you're really hankerin to blow up some melty-faced silver guys, multi-leveled star trails just dont cut it.

I'd give a stick of buffalo nickles to make a new episode to this game in 3D, though. *cough* Anybody got an engine? =]

Hydro-space thingy!

Well after i played this about 5 times over i reliezed...hey this game has crappy replay action! (plus it is way too short...i beat it in about 40 minutes...maybe less)
Anywho like Vesh said (by the way us people who have names which start with "V" are cool right?) the almost-hyper, hyper-drive was too slow. and also 3d would be cool but also harder to play...

Oh also your guy's news on the home pager is great! keep it comin'

Catch some reading

I caution those of you who have never played this bittersweet title. Only play it if you have much more patience than I have. I. E. are ready to read a book between solar systems. And I am a pacifist, so you can only imagine how much patience I have. The action is excellent, the space opera is gripping and compelling, but even with the hyperdrive, you will spend hours traveling between solar systems.
